Step 1: scraped the dry cochineal lake off of the filter paper into a jar and crushed it into a powder.

Step 2: On a ceramic plate, poured out a small portion of the lake and added three drops of egg yolk mixed with a bit of water. I used the candlestick holder to mix the pigment into the liquid, grinding in circular motions for a few minutes. The resulting paint was relatively smooth and not too thin.

Step 3: after washing the plate, mixed a small amount of lake with three drops of the egg white. I tried to get the settled portion of the white but it still came out foamy when I tried to paint it.

Step 4: After washing the plate again, I mixed the lake with the gum arabic and muddled it in a circular motion for several minutes. The paint came out smooth with a strong color.

Step 5: Repeated steps 2-4 with the azurite and ochre. The azurite turned out somewhat muted and slightly green, with the strongest blue color on the gum arabic paint which had larger particles. The ochre had strong, consistent color with all binding agents
